| How
can I change the port that Norton anti-virus and eNetBot use for
E-mail (POP3 - Port 110) to avoid a clash between these programs |
Changing
Ports
Both Norton
anti virus and eNetBot Mail require to use port 110 on
your PC for email related purposes (eNetBot Mail uses this port for
sending and receiving your email and Norton antivirus uses this port for
monitoring incoming mail for viruses).
It is
necessary to make some setting changes so that both these programs can
work together. Please follow the procedure listed below. The changes
need to be made in 3 programs: eNetBot Mail, Norton Antivirus and
your E-mail program
Norton AntiVirus (NAV) email protection uses port 110 to check
incoming email for viruses. eNetBot Mail also uses this port. To fix
this, change the port that Norton AntiVirus uses.
To change the port that Norton AntiVirus uses:
To change the port that Norton AntiVirus uses, you need to change a
registry key.
NOTE: This information is provided to help resolve the specific
problem of another program using the same port that NAV email protection
uses, and it is provided for your convenience. While this should work if
properly set up, NAV is designed to use port 110, and it has not been
tested with other port settings. Any changes made to the registry are
done at your own risk and are not supported by Symantec Technical
Support.
To change the registry key:
CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system
registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry
could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure
you modify only the keys specified.
Please see the document How
to back up the Windows registry before proceeding. This
document is available from the Symantec Fax-on-Demand system. In the
U.S. and Canada, call (541) 984-2490, select option 2, and then request
document 927002.
1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. Navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\eMail
Protection
4. In the right pane, double-click the Default Port value.
5. Click Decimal, and then change the value of this entry to an unused
port (port 22000 is usually available). If you enter a port that is
already in use, Poproxy (the Norton AntiVirus email scanner) will not
start. You must also reconfigure all of your email clients so that
they will work with the new port. Even after doing this, some email
clients, including Netscape, will not work because they do not support
ports other than 110.
